Film Score was devised in collaboration with the Rhubaba Gallery Choir .
The work creates a physical liminal space for the audience between the seen and heard in film with the film acting as a moving image score for the choir to perform to/from. Working with archive footage of a performance of Oskar Schlemmer’s Das Triadische Ballet, the choir and I worked on devising a audiovisual language using shape, colour, texture and movement to create the score. Working the phonetician Fabienne Westerberg from the Glasgow University Laboratory of Phonetics (GULP), we used an ultrasound machine to see how our vocal tracts mimicked the behaviours of the objects in the score to create sounds that corresponded in timbre.
Created over a number of workshops with the choir, the work was first performed at Sound Thought 2016 at the CCA Glasgow.
